The definition of a “photograph” is a topic of much discussion these days, as AI-GC makes inroads in visual imaging and photography.

But most commonly recognized definitions of the noun “photograph” involve the recording of light, and any of those definitions will suffice when describing the kinds of images to be held up against the Trust Test.

The word photo+graphy is from the Greek for light+writing, and “light” has always played a key role in photography — and in TTG.

Not all photographs are TTG-qualified

Not everything called a “photograph” as defined by every definition will qualify as TTG. (That’s the reason for having a standard; see #428.)

In other words, many types of images that are regarded as “photographs” may be disqualified by one or another requirement of the Trust Test — but that disqualification by TTG does not make those images something other than “a photograph” (see #1104).
