opt-in vs. opt-out

  • 1. TTG is an “opt-in” system, not an “opt-out” system.

Use of TTG is always completely voluntary and optional.

Since each person applies the TTG label only to their own photographs — never to anyone else’s — those who have no need for TTG can easily ignore it.

  • 2. How do “opt in” systems work?

The default is to be excluded unless one opts in.

No participants will be “in on” a particular behavior unless they choose to be included (i.e., they “opt in” for special treatment).

An example of “opt-in” would be a retailer that says, “We will not send you any promotional emails unless you ask to receive them.”

  • 3. How do “opt out” systems work?

The default is to be included unless one opts out.

All participants are “in on” the assigned default unless they choose to be excluded (i.e., they “opt out” for special treatment).

An example of “opt-out” would be a retailer that says, “We will send you promotional emails unless you ask not to receive them.”
